Poem Excerpt:
'Roberta Lee Streeter a.k.a. Bobbie Gentry' by
Nadine Kachur
"I haven’t
kept myself up like Cher, must be a full-time job after
sixty. I don’t recognize myself. Was I supposed to
be what she became? Cher was more ambitious. Do my eyes
look sad? They are dark enough, like hers. I would plaster
mascara on my lashes like black glue, thick and sticky.
I was ambitious too."
Info: A collaborative effort
between downtown neighbors brings this exhibit of poems
and photographs to The Writers' Bloc for a grand opening
of the art season.
Writers' Bloc member Nadine Kachur contacted
local photographer Steve Weiss when exhibition
space opened at the cooperative writers space. A North Encanto
neighbor, Weiss had met Kachur and used her as a model for
an installation at the Nelson Fine Art Center at ASU in
2001. Together, they utilized free-associative logic, cognitive
verbal imagery and a two-headed coin to pair seven photos
with seven poems. The work will both be displayed and published
in a limited edition available for sale at the opening.
Nadine Kachur is a poet who received her
M.A. in English from ASU and teaches at Phoenix College.
Recently, she's participated in collaborative work including
two shows @ Central Gallery: Urban Legends (paired with
print artist G. Gaddis) and Dios de los Muertos (with husband
B. Lockhart). Her work was featured in this year's Tempe
Poetry in April series.
Steve Weiss is a native Phoenix photographer,
whose work is included in both corporate and individual
collections. His commissioned projects include work for
the Del Webb Corporation and the law firm of Gallagher and
Kennedy. He was a Phoenix Art Museum Contemporary Forum
Artist Material Grant winner in 2001, and has exhibited
widely in the Phoenix area. Weiss is also the film promoter
for No Festival Required, a screening avenue for independent
films.
Where: Writers'
Bloc, 902 N. Sixth Street, Phoenix (NW corner of Sixth Street
& Garfield).
