February 2006 Third Friday & March 2006 First Friday

The Trunk Space, in conjunction with Writers’ Bloc, is pleased to present "Love Stories," a solo exhibition of new art by Gregory Sale.

With a background in sculpture, performance art and community-based projects, Gregory Sale is one of the most respected conceptual artists in the state. He is well-known for his distinctly witty critiques, ironic observations of modern life, and for his public work in arts administration.

Considering such background, "Love Stories" marks a bold step for Sale. The art in this exhibition, says Gregory, is his most personal body of work in years. As the title indicates the art deals with love and relationships. However, it is no polite valentine. This is an exhibition of intimate narratives, and moments from his life and family history related in honest language.

Through text-based pieces, Sale dissects and presents some of the hardest moments he has faced. They are personal, intensely emotional stories. Others give a flavor but maintain a sense of privacy. The artworks in this show also describe (by example) universal truths that both draw in and isolate the viewer through their openness. "It is uncomfortable for people to see such moments presented in public settings, in deliberately honest non-sentimental language," says Trunk Space co-owner JRC. "It is this splicing of clinical language onto obviously heartfelt memories that Gregory has used to create the art of this series."

In a sense, the greater work of art in this show might be, as Sale has said, "the navigation of the personal, private, and public." That is to say, the balance he plays with between his life as a public figure, and a private man who uses his personal life to create his art is an act of art in itself.

When: Friday, February 17, from 7-9PM
