So You Wanna Be a Rock Star? with Kevin Vaughan-Brubaker
Ever dream of being the lead singer in a rock band?
Well, Writers’ Bloc can provide that opportunity.
On Saturday, March 18 from 2 to 4pm at Modified
Arts, 407 East Roosevelt, Writers’ Bloc
will present the first part of the three-part songwriting workshop,
“So You Wanna Be a Rock Star?” The
two-hour class, taught by instructor Kevin Vaughan-Brubaker, will
focus on the composition of lyrics for music by the band Mondegreen.
At the conclusion of the class, students will be able to take
home the music with the opportunity to write original lyrics.
Information on resources for professional songwriters to help
establish an overall rock n' roll lifestyle will be available.
On a date determined during the first meeting, students are invited
to a private rehearsal with Mondegreen. The five-piece rock band
will give students the chance to review written lyrics and discuss
how the lyrics could be performed.
On Tuesday, April 5 at 8pm, the public is invited
to Modified Arts for the third and final part of the workshop,
a contest between students. Workshop participants
will perform their original lyrics on stage with Mondegreen, competing
for prizes including the opportunity to perform live with Mondegreen
at Last Exit, two complimentary tickets to the Phoenix Symphony,
autographed CDs from local bands Fatigo and Andrew Jackson Jihad,
and more. A panel of judges, including Leslie Barton, Booking
Agent of Modified Arts and Donald Martinez of The Shizz, will
determine the top three winners. Entertainment will follow the
contest, and the cover charge for the public is $3.
